When I think about the question I’m most frequently asked as a trustee, it’s not, “Where do you stand on SOGI?” My stance isn’t a secret to anybody who knows me. It’s not my thoughts on Truth & Reconciliation, or land acknowledgements, because again.. IFYKYK.
In fact, there is of question I’m asked consistently: What do school trustees do? And if the person asking doesn’t have children, or their children are grown, there is often a follow question along the lines of ‘why should I vote in school trustee elections.” I genuinely love getting both of these questions/comments, because it gives me an opportunity to talk about my work & how much joy it brings me.
This graphic really sums up our role well. I would like to note, we don’t all sit on the same committees. We do all get the feedback from partner groups/committees, as it is reported to us by the reps in our meetings. Sometimes it’s in closed due to the nature of the report (labour related). And though we all try to attend school & district functions, sometimes not all 9 of us can make it. Sometimes only the zone rep will be invited to a school function. All of us have different schedules, so some may physically visit their zone schools more often than others.
I’d love to hear any questions you have on this topic.
